Is Khoda Baksh Chowdhury’s Shock Resignation Just The Tip Of The Iceberg, Will It Impact Yunus’s Reign In Bangladesh?

Khoda Baksh Chowdhury: Khoda Baksh Chowdhury has rendered his resignation with immediate effect. This will hurt Muhammad Yunus.

Khoda Baksh Chowdhury: Khoda Baksh Chowdhury, Special Assistant (Home Ministry) to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, has rendered his resignation with immediate effect.

Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has accepted the resignation of Chowdhury, who was appointed as a special assistant to Yunus on November 10, 2024.

Chowdhury had joined the United Nations Transitional Administration in Eastern Slavonia in May 1996, where he initially served as deputy sector chief. He later served as the sector chief in one of the mission’s two sectors.

The country has been a witness to massive unrest, riots and attacks against opposition parties and minority communities after the broad daylight assassination of uprising leader Osman Hadi. Hadi succumbed to injuries following a gun attack on December 12. After his death, the offices of the mass circulation Daily Star and Prothom Alo and two leading cultural groups, Chhayanot and the Udichi Shilpi Goshti, were set on fire.

The Return Of Tarique Rahman

Tarique Rahman, the heir of Khaleda Zia and the Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, is poised to hurt the chances of Muhammad Yunus.

Rahman will challenge Yunus in the first election in Bangladesh since the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina regime in July 2024.

The List Of Resignations Till Now

Till date, at least three advisers have resigned from Muhammad Yunus’s interim government. This includes Nahid Islam, a student leader adviser who resigned from the advisory council earlier in 2025. On 10 December 2025, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain stepped down from his post as adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. On the same day, Mahfuj Alam also rendered his resignation from his role as adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
