Rakshabandhan: History and Significance

The roots of Raksha Bandhan trace back to the era of deities and divine beings. According to a popular legend, during a battle against the King Shishupal, Lord Krishna suffered a minor injury to his finger. In this moment, Draupadi bound a piece of cloth around Krishna’s wrist as a token of protection. Touched by her gesture, Krishna vowed to safeguard her.

In a parallel historical narrative from the medieval period, the festival gains significance through a brother’s solemn pledge to his sister. Rani Karnavati of Mewar, faced with an imminent threat from Bahadur Shah of Gujarat, resorted to sending a Rakhi to Emperor Humayun. This symbolic act of seeking assistance resonated deeply with Humayun, leading him to swiftly halt his military campaign and come to the aid of the queen, exemplifying the profound essence of the festival.

How to Celebrate Raksha bandhan?

Raksha Bandhan, a sacred festival observed in India, encompasses a meaningful practice referred to as the “pooja vidhi.” This ritual unfolds with having a pooja thali, featuring a diya (oil lamp), roli (vermilion powder), rice grains, sweets, and the Rakhi itself. Sisters initiate the ceremony by conducting an Aarti, gently rotating the thali in circular motions before their brothers, and adorning their foreheads with a tilak of roli. Later, they secure the Rakhi around their brothers’ wrists, accompanied by heartfelt prayers for their prosperity and well-being.

On the other side, brothers present gifts to their sisters, as a symbol of their affection and pledge to shield them from life’s challenges. The pooja vidhi cultivates a spiritual ambiance, strengthing the bond shared between siblings and marking the essence of Raksha Bandhan 2023 as a celebration of love and guardianship.
