ISRO to launch new rocket SSLV-D2 today

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on Friday launched its new and smallest rocket SSLV-D2 (Small Sataellite Launch Vehicle) into space. This launch was done from Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. Now news has come that SSLV-D2 has successfully placed all the three satellites in the low earth orbit. ISRO Chief S Somnath congratulated the teams for placing the three satellites in the right place in the orbit. He said that when problems occurred during SSLV-D1, we analyzed them and took necessary steps and ensured that the launch was successful this time.

Earlier, SSLV-D2 flew into space carrying three satellites, including Janus-1 of American company Antaris, AzaadiSAT-2 of Chennai-based space startup SpaceKidz and ISRO’s satellite EOS-07. These three satellites were installed in circular orbit 450 km apart.

Will be used to launch into lower orbit

According to ISRO, SSLV is used to launch satellites up to 500 kg into lower orbit. It provides the facility of satellite launch at an economical cost on the basis of rocket on demand. The 34 m tall SSLV rocket has a diameter of 2 m. The weight of this rocket is 120 tonnes.

The flight had failed in August last year

The first flight of this rocket failed in August last year. Last year, during the first flight of SSLV, the launch could not be successful due to vibrations felt during the separation of the second stage of the rocket. Also, the software of the rocket was launching the satellites in the wrong orbit, due to which ISRO had canceled the launch of SSLV.

The total weight of SSLV-D2 is 175.2 kg, in which the Eos satellite weighs 156.3 kg, Janus-1 weighs 10.2 kg and AzaadiSat-2 weighs 8.7 kg. According to ISRO, the cost of the SSLV rocket is around Rs 56 crore.

ISRO will execute many missions this year

ISRO Chief S Somnath told that at present we are preparing for the launch of GSLV Mark 3. GSLV Mark 3 will launch 236 satellites of One Web India simultaneously. This launching will happen in the middle of March. Apart from this, ISRO is also preparing for the launch of PSLV-C55. This launching can happen by the end of March. ISRO Chief told that we are also working on the landing of the reusable launch vehicle. A team is currently present at the landing site in Chitradurga. We are hoping that if everything goes well, we will start practice landings in the next few days. S. Somnath said that many missions are to be held this year. Especially preparations are going on for the Gaganyaan programme.
