Jharkhand political crisis: BJP aims to seek trust vote amid disqualification buzz

New Delhi: Hemant Soren, the chief minister of Jharkhand, will ask for a vote of confidence during the special session of the Assembly on Monday despite the possibility that he will lose his status as an MLA.

Hemant Soren’s potential appointment as the Jharkhand chief minister was in doubt following the Election Commission’s (EC) recommendation to Governor Ramesh Bais seeking Soren’s disqualification.

Although the EC has not yet made its decision official, there is a rumour that the poll panel has recommended that the chief minister be disqualified from serving as an MLA due to electoral law violations.

Soren’s party, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), fears that the BJP may make a serious attempt to steal MLAs from both the party and its ally Congress in an effort to overthrow the government amid a threat of disqualification. As many as 32 MLAs of the ruling coalition were taken on August 30 to a resort in Raipur, the capital of Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh. Ahead of the vote on the trust, they have returned to Ranchi.

Former chief minister and Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi said that a special session to seek a vote of trust is beyond comprehension.

“In general, a state government seeks trust vote when the governor or a court orders the same. But, that’s not the case in Jharkhand. It is clear that the government does not trust its MLAs,” Marandi told reporters here.

“The party will seek Soren’s resignation over the office-of-profit issue,” he added.

At least 30 Jharkhand state legislators who are part of the UPA coalition in power travelled from Raipur to Ranchi on Sunday afternoon in order to attend the special session of the assembly on Monday.

Since August 30, the lawmakers have been camped out at a resort close to Raipur.

The UPA alliance, which was led by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), had relocated the MLAs to an opulent resort in Nava Raipur out of concern that the opposition BJP would kidnap them in order to overthrow the government.
