J&K: 4 dead, several missing after cloudburst hits Kishtwar

On early Wednesday morning, a cloudburst devastated a rural village in Kishtwar district of J&K. According to reports, at least four people have died, with more than 30 people still missing.

Following heavy rainfall, the disaster occurred at Honjar Dacchan hamlet in Kishtwar Mandav village, and a rescue mission is currently underway. There are no roads in the village.

An official from J&K said a major cloudburst hit Kishtwar’s Dachhan area. “Four bodies have been recovered so far,” the official said.

Kishtwar District Magistrate Ashok Kumar Sharma said a team of the Army and police have been sent to the area to carry out rescue operations.

“One of our SDRF teams from Kishtwar reached the affected village and two more teams are on their way from Doda and Udhampur districts. Two more SDRF teams are waiting for weather to improve to get airlifted from Jammu and Srinagar to the scene and join the rescue mission,” Director General of Police-cum-Commandant General Home Guard, Civil Defence and SDRF, V K Singh, said.

Kishtwar’s Deputy Commissioner also informed that the Indian Air Force authorities have been contacted for lifting the injured in incidents related to the cloudburst.

Most parts of the J&K region have been receiving heavy rains for the past few days.

With the prediction of more rains till July-end, authorities in Kishtwar have asked people living along water bodies and slide-prone areas to remain vigilant.

“The meteorological department has predicted heavy rains during the upcoming days and water levels in rivers and nallas are expected to rise, which can pose a threat to the inhabitants residing near rivers, nallas, water bodies and slide-prone areas,” the district administration said in an advisory issued late on Tuesday night.

People have been advised to remain alert and very cautious as water level has increased in all rivers. “Don’t venture out on hilly and landslip and mudslide prone areas,” it warned.
