Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging that it is functioning under the influence of the government. In a strongly worded statement, Sibal expressed deep concerns over the credibility of elections, warning that if the current system continues, democracy in India will be reduced to a mere façade.

"The Election Commission is in the hands of the government," Sibal remarked, criticizing what he perceives as the institution's bias towards the ruling party. He further warned that if the EC continues to act as a tool of the government, election results would become predictable, raising serious doubts about free and fair elections.

"If democracy continues like this and the Election Commission keeps lobbying for the government, then the results that will definitely come are in front of you," Sibal said, implying that electoral outcomes are being influenced. He also stated that such a system is not true democracy but a sham, adding, "We have been suspicious for many years… What happens on the ground is known to everyone, but there is no one to listen."

Sibal’s remarks come at a time when questions about electoral integrity and the independence of constitutional institutions are being hotly debated. The opposition has repeatedly raised concerns about the neutrality of the Election Commission, especially in the run-up to key elections.

His statement has triggered fresh political controversy, with opposition parties likely to intensify their criticism of the electoral process. Meanwhile, the Election Commission has yet to respond to these allegations.

As the debate over electoral transparency and fairness continues, Sibal’s comments have reignited discussions on whether India's democratic institutions are truly independent or increasingly becoming instruments of political influence.
