Karnataka Bike Taxi Ban: Rapido Halts Services, Ola & Uber Continue Amid Confusion, What Lies Ahead?

The Karnataka High Court's ruling to ban bike taxis has come into effect from June 16, 2025. Rapido has complied by pausing its services, while Ola and Uber still list bike rides on their platforms.

An order from the High Court was upheld today, and all bike taxi services in Karnataka are now officially banned. The decision came after a division bench refused to stay the April order that all bike-taxi aggregators, including Rapido, Ola, and Uber, had to stop working from June 16. They said this because there wasn't a formal regulatory system in place.

Rapido said early this morning that it has "paused" its bike-taxi service. In Karnataka, the platform took the feature off of its app and sent cars to a "bike-parcel" section instead.

Legal Setting

Concerns about the legality of privately registered two-wheelers used for business passenger rides led to the Karnataka High Court's order. In April, a single judge issued the first order, giving companies six weeks to follow it. This deadline was later pushed back to June 15. After Ola, Uber, and Rapido made appeals, they were turned down by a division bench, which said the ban had to stay in place until an official regulatory system is put in place.

How Stakeholders Reacted

Bicycle taxi drivers and aggregators have both made pressing requests because of the ban. It is said that over 100,000 gig workers have lost big chances to make money. Some groups, like the Namma Bike Taxi Association, have written to politicians like Rahul Gandhi and Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah to ask them to lift the ban. They say that bike taxis are an affordable way to get around places that have traffic jams and bad public transportation.

Nasscom and other industry groups have criticized the sudden shutdown and warned of broad social and economic problems. To allow bike taxis to operate legally while a long-term regulatory plan is being made, they are asking for an immediate interim policy.

Effects on Commuters

For people who use it every day, especially in Bengaluru, the ban adds to their confusion. People have praised bike taxis as cheap and quick alternatives to cars and buses. Many now have to deal with longer wait times, crowded alternatives, and the possibility that the costs of other means will go up. Hashtags like #KarnatakaWantsBikeTaxis show how people are reacting on social media, which shows that people are getting more and more worried about problems with their commutes.

Karnataka's government now has the ball. They need to quickly come up with a strategy that balances the needs of commuters, the law, and the livelihoods of thousands of people. Many people are paying close attention because the future of app-based two-wheeler transportation in India, not just in Karnataka, could depend on how well the regulations are set up.
