Karnataka extends Covid-19 lockdown till June 7

Karnataka will remain locked down till June 7 to contain the spread of Covid-19, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said Friday.

The announcement came three days before the current lockdown is scheduled to end on May 24.

“Till 6 am on June 7, the stringent measures currently in force will continue,” Yediyurappa said after chairing a meeting with ministers and officials. He said the decision to extend the lockdown by two more weeks was based on experts’ advices.

The CM added that there are no changes in the restrictions but noted that people were not following the lockdown norms and has allowed the police authorities to take action against the violators.

“The public were violating norms and stepping out despite the curfew for unimportant things. It is crucial people follow the norms or strict action will be initiated against violators,” the Chief Minister told the media.

They are of the opinion that the current lockdown is yielding results with the number of fresh cases gradually decreasing.

Meanwhile, Karnataka on Thursday reported a dip in fresh infections, logging 28,869 cases, but saw a rise in deaths which touched 548. This is the fifth time that the state is reporting over 500 deaths in a day and all these have been during this month.
