Karnataka: FIR against rape-accused Lingayat returning to mutt; protests erupt

New Delhi: Protests have broken out in Karnataka’s Chitraguda with calls for strict action against a Lingayat seer accused of raping young girls. A prominent Lingayat mutt seer named Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru was taken into custody on Monday in connection with an alleged case of child sexual assault.

An FIR has been fled against Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru by Mysuru city police after a complaint was filed on behalf of two minors. He was detained in accordance with the POCSO Act’s provisions protecting children from sexual offences.

“All of you being with me has given me courage. There is no need to fear. Let’s respect the law. The fountain of support is seen here. I want to thank you all,” said the seer, after returning to the mutt.

The police, according to the protesters, have not taken any significant action despite last night’s completion of medical tests.

Additionally, the protesters claim that NGO representatives who reported the incident to the appropriate authorities on Monday were not permitted entry into the station.

The “Odanadi Seva Samsthe” NGO in Mysuru, which works for the rescue, rehabilitation, reintegration, and empowerment of trafficked and sexually exploited women and children, was contacted by two girls attending a school run by the Lingayat Mutt. Following their account of their ordeal, it was brought to the district children’s welfare committee’s attention, and as a result, a case was subsequently opened by the police.

The girls, 15 and 16, who were residing in the hostel run by the Murugha Mutt, allegedly suffered sexual abuse for more than three and a half years, according to the complaint.
