Karnataka govt gives Y-category security to HC judges who delivered hijab verdict

The Karnataka government has decided that it will provide ‘Y’ category security to all the three judges who pronounced the verdict on the wearing of hijab in the institutional institutions.

Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai said,” I instructed DG and IG to probe the complaint filed in Vidhanasoudha Police Station thoroughly in which some people gave life threats to the judges.

Bommai’s statement comes in the wake of the emergence of a video in which a man is seen issuing threats against the three judges. “This is one of the alarming signs in democracy and we should ensure that these kinds of anti-national forces don’t grow. Law and order are in place in the country because of the judiciary,” the chief minister said outside his residence on Sunday.

The three-judge bench also comprised Justices Krishna Dixit and Khazi M Jaibunnisa. According to police sources, two people have been arrested in Tamil Nadu after the video came to light.

“I am also questioning the pseudo seculars who are remaining silent. This is not secularism, but communalism. We have to stand together and protest against this act,” Bommai added.

The Karnataka High Court earlier this week dismissed a batch of petitions filed by a section of Muslim students from the Government Pre-University Girls College in Udupi seeking permission to wear hijab inside the classroom.

In its 129-page order, the court said that hijab is not an essential religious practice in Islam and upheld the Karnataka government’s order banning the use of any cloth on the campus that could disturb peace, harmony and public order.

The prescription of school uniform is only a reasonable restriction, constitutionally permissible which the students cannot object to, the high court had said.
