Know why nation celebrates Army Day on January 15; PM Modi conveys best wishes as in a first, parade moved to Bengaluru

Army Day: The country commemorates ‘Army Day’ every year on January 15 to honour Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa's (then a Lieutenant General), who succeeded Francis Butcher as the last British Army Chief Officer and became the nation’s first Chief Commander on this day in 1949.

On this day the nation honours honour the warriors who gave their lives in defence of the nation and its people. While celebrations are held across the nation, the main Army Day parade is held at the Cariappa Parade Ground in the Delhi Cantonment since its inception in 1949.

Army Day 2023

However, for the first time the tradition has been broken this year as the Army Day parade is being held in Bangaluru, Karnataka today. Being held at MEG & Centre Parade Ground, under the aegis of the Southern Army Command, the parade can be watched online on the official social media accounts of the Indian Army.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his best wishes on the day and said, "On Army Day, I convey my best wishes to all army personnel, veterans and their families. Every Indian is proud of our Army and will always be grateful to our soldiers. They have always kept our nation safe and are widely admired for their service during times of crisis."

Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande is reviewing the parade and present gallantry awards on the occasion. It will be followed by a daring motorcycle display by the Army Service Corps (ASC) Tornadoes, a skydiving display by the Paratroopers, daredevil jumps, and a fly-past by helicopters of the Army Aviation Corps.

Warriors honoured

Sena medals and gallantry awards are also given out on this day. Warriors who are awarded the Param Vir Chakra and Ashok Chakra also participate in the parade every year. Besides, the country’s military might including the hardware and numerous contingents among others are part of the parade.

Addressing the parade, COAS Manoj Pande said, "I want to congratulate all those who have received gallantry awards, COAS citations. The Army is taking measures to ensure combat readiness and adapt to the latest technology. The situation on the eastern border is stable, at Line of Actual Control (LAC) we are ready to take on any contingency. All the equipment is adequate."
