Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti: PM pays tribute to secularist leader

October 2, is very important day for India. Apart from the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, October 2 also birth anniversary of India’s second prime minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri. This year is the118th birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri.

He was born as Munshi Lal Bahadur Shastri on October 1904 in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh. His mother’s name was Ram Dulari and father’s name was Munshi Prasad Srivastava. Shastri’s wife’s name was Lalita Devi. Shastri was an efficient Gandhian leader and lived a simple life. He was very calm personality.

Lal Bahadur Shastri was an important figure during the freedom struggle and rose to prominence after independence. he led the country during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965 and his slogan ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’ became very famous during the war.

Shastri was responsible for the White Revolution, a campaign that supported the production of milk. in 1965 he promoted Green Revolution in India with the aim of farmer’s prosperity and to make India self reliant in food grain production.

Shastri was regarded as a secularist who denied to mix politics and religion.

Lal Bahadur Shastri died on January 11, 1966. He became first individual to be honored with Bharat Ratana posthumously.

On the occasion of Lal Bahadur Shastri’s Jayanti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute. Taking to twitter, Modi said that Lal Bahadur Shastri’s life, which was based on value and principles, will always remain a source of inspiration for India’s citizen.
