Law of land supreme, Indian citizen or stays in India must follow it: IT minister

After entering office on Thursday, new Information and Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasised that the law of the land is supreme, and Twitter will have to follow new social media and intermediary laws. “Anyone who is an Indian citizen or stays in India must adhere by the laws of the country,” he said.

The warning comes amid the Centre and Twitter are engaged in a tussle over the new IT rules, especially on the point that the social media giant has not been able to appoint a grievance redressal officer yet.

Meanwhile, Rajeev Chandrashekhar, the newly-appointed Minister of State for Information Technology, on being asked about the tussle with Twitter, told ANI:

“I have just taken charge. The Ministry doesn’t operate on a unilateral basis and this has nothing to do with individual views and opinions. The Ministry will sit with the new Union Minister and address all these issues.”

Earlier on Thursday, Twitter told the Delhi High Court that it will need eight weeks to appoint a grievance officer in compliance with the rules. Twitter’s response came a day after the High Court told the social media company that it cannot take as long as it wanted to appoint the official.
