Lawyer Agarwal asked the SC to relieve him from Vijay Mallya Case

A lawyer representing Vijay Mallya on Thursday urged the Supreme Court to be discharged from the case related to the fugitive businessman as he was missing and is not speaking to his lawyer. EC Agarwal, advocate-on-record for Vijay Mallya in the Supreme Court, told a bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Hema Kohli, “As per my knowledge, Vijay Mallya is residing in the United Kingdom but he is currently not communicating. I have his email address. Since he is not traceable and is not visible anywhere in India, I should be exempted from representing him.”

The court was hearing petitions filed by Vijay Mallya regarding a money dispute with State Bank of India. The bench allowed the counsel to follow the procedure for acquittal from the case and asked the court registry to inform about Vijay Mallya’s e-mail id and present residential address and the hearing will be held in January next year.

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court sentenced Vijay Mallya to four months in jail for contempt of court for violating its orders. The court also directed the government officials to take steps to ensure the presence of Vijay Mallya in India. The UK High Court approved the extradition of Vijay Mallya in April 2020, but the case has been hanging for two and a half years.
