LPG Price Hiked

Starting Tuesday morning, the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders will increase by ₹50 across the board, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri confirmed on Monday. The hike will impact both beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) and general consumers.

Ujjwala and Non-Ujjwala Consumers Both Affected

Under the new pricing, PMUY beneficiaries will see the price of their subsidised LPG cylinder go up from ₹500 to ₹550. For regular consumers, the price will increase from ₹803 to ₹853 per cylinder. The Union Minister stated that this revision will be reviewed every 15 days, with adjustments to be made based on fluctuations in international market prices.

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is a flagship scheme aimed at providing clean cooking fuel to women in Below Poverty Line (BPL) households across rural India. The increase in prices is likely to impact millions of low-income households, even as the government continues to maintain subsidies for PMUY users.

Excise Duty Hike Linked to ₹43,000 Crore OMC Loss

Addressing concerns about the recent hike in excise duties on petrol and diesel, Puri reassured that these would not result in an increase in retail fuel prices for consumers. “These are internal fiscal adjustments to help offset the ₹43,000 crore loss incurred by Oil Marketing Companies due to the previous subsidisation of LPG prices,” he explained.

He also added that since India follows a deregulated pricing model for petrol and diesel, prices are expected to be moderated by oil marketing companies based on global trends. “You can legitimately expect adjustments in the retail prices in alignment with international oil prices,” he said.

The move comes amid rising tensions in the global energy market and persistent fiscal pressure on domestic oil companies, raising questions on how long such consumer buffers can be maintained.

Under the new pricing, PMUY beneficiaries will see the price of their subsidised LPG cylinder go up from ₹500 to ₹550. For regular consumers, the price will increase from ₹803 to ₹853 per cylinder.
