LPG Shortage: Massive Relief For India! ONGC Starts Gas Production In Arabian Sea, Would This Solve The Country’s Fuel Crisis?

LPG Shortage: Increased local production for India would help in stabilizing availability and cushioning consumers from sudden price shocks. The steady flow of generated gas could be used to directly support industries, households and transportation that rely on natural gas and LPG.

LPG Shortage: Amid the ongoing Middle East crisis, state-run Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has started supplies of commercial gas from platform B-12-24P under the Daman Upside Development Project (DUDP). The company announced that the platform was commissioned successfully on March 29.

LPG Shortage- ONGC’s Arabian Sea Initiative

Situated in the Arabian Sea, the offshore project is based about 180 kilometres northwest of Mumbai and 80 kilometres south of Pipavav. The project, which was developed by the Indian government with an investment of approximately $1 billion, involves sending of the platform’s generated gas to the Hazira Plant. The development marks the first step of gas monetization with the generated output from all wells to be ramped up in several phases.

The announcement comes as happy news for millions of Indians as the country’s vision of boosting domestic gas production capabilities amid the ongoing Middle East crisis are now achieved.

Domestic Energy Production Strengthened

For long, India has been heavily dependent on the Middle East region for supply of critical fuels. The ongoing Middle East crisis has exposed India to global uncertainties. Thankfully, the launch of gas production by ONGC could possibly mark a turning point in how India manages its LPG and broader fuel needs.

The development would help the country reduce its reliance on volatile international markets. Increased local production for India would help in stabilizing availability and cushioning consumers from sudden price shocks. The steady flow of generated gas could be used to directly support industries, households and transportation that rely on natural gas and LPG. Over time, it could help in easing supply shortages and improving accessibility, especially in urban and semi-urban regions.

By monetizing domestic gas reserves, India can reduce its import bill, improve its trade balance and reinvest savings into renewable and sustainable energy initiatives.
