Maharashtra: Rift in Congress as spokesperson quits over “demotion”

Sachin Sawant, who has been a spokesperson of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress has allegedly resigned from his post. Considering the scenario, it is believed that the resignation has been given for upsetting Sawant by demoting his place to assistant spokesperson. Report says that Atul Londhe, who joined Congress in 2016, has been given the post of party’s chief spokesperson. Before entering Congress, Londhe was serving as a party leader of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Meanwhile, Sachin Sawant is refusing to accept that he has resigned. Instead, when he was asked about the removal of his position from social media, he said that he had written a letter to Indian National Congress (INC) party president Sonia Gandhi in regards to considering his new role in the party.

The decision of appointing Atul Londhe as chief spokesperson was taken by Maharashtra Congress chief, Nana Patole. Since Patole’s appointment, many party’s senior leaders are unhappy because of the decisions he has taken. The continued rift in the party has brough another dissatisfaction story in front of all. Nana Patole is also a current joinee in the party as he has just entered in Congress after the Maharashtra election blunder of 2019. Before that he was a party member of Bharatiya Janata Party.

Coming back to Sawant, he has been an important voice of Congress for 10 years on the media front. He has been an intense critic of BJP and the former David Fadnavis’s government. In one of the recent tweets, Sawant attacked the Center Government by explicitly saying: “The name of the Mid-Day Meal scheme has been changed to PM Poshan, but mere name change cannot hide increased exploitation of the masses for the last seven years. There is a need for the right strategy, planning, proper implementation and willpower.’’Further he added, “In 2013, India was ranked 63rd, today it is 101st. The score has gone down from 28.8 in 2012 to 27.5 in 2021. Surprisingly, India’s neighbours Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh are consistently ahead of India. In the CHILD WASTING (extremely malnourished children under 5 years) category India has been consistently performing worst in the world for the last 5 years,” he said.
