Popularly known as Captain Cool, cricket sensation Mahendra Singh Dhoni is once again defending his home state—this time not with the bat, but as the brand ambassador of Jharkhand Tourism. Notably, Dhoni has accepted the position without any fee, but he will have to pay for travel only during the shooting of the promotional campaign. The move is driven by branding, sentiment, and business acumen, as Jharkhand tries to promote its tourism attractions amid the competitive holiday industry.

A Star for the State: Dhoni’s Endorsement Power

Dhoni is reputed to be one of the most credible public figures in India, with a brand value of more than 95 million dollars. The fact that he makes his appearance to support tourism endeavours in Jharkhand at no cost makes the campaign authentic in terms of name and fame. It is noteworthy that Dhoni normally gets paid approximately 5 crore per brand endorsement, and his free participation has added extra value. Once cleared, the four-year contract will offer Dhoni one day a year to shoot up promotions. His availability will take a few months to release the first advertisement. His support would have the potential of turning the relatively undeveloped attractions in Jharkhand into must-visit sites.

Reviving Tourism with Strategy and Pride

Jharkhand is also resisting a dip in the tourist footfall, which fell to 3.58 crore in 2023 as compared to 3.83 crore in 2022. The government has hence responded by introducing new projects such as the Eco-Tourism Circuit and a mining tourism project in partnership with Central Coalfields. This is an attempt to attract different varieties of visitors, as with cultural events such as the Global Heritage Conclave and the Jharkhand Tourism Adventure Festival. Today, led by the presence of Dhoni, the state is throwing its lot on the lure of local pride and celebrity appeal to get its footing back on the Indian tourism map.

Dhoni recently trademarked his brand architecture with the trademark of Captain Cool. In spite of the dismal performance of CSK in IPL 2025, his mid-season appointment as the captain kept the team on the ground. He also lent his support to the SWEEP voter awareness program in 2024 on an unpaid basis, demonstrating that he is influential in areas other than cricket.
