Mahua Moitra Accuses Ethics Committee of Asking ‘Filthy Questions,’ Walks Out of Parliament

Mahua Moitra: Members of the opposition parties, including as BSP MP Danish Ali and Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra, left the Parliament Ethics Committee hearing on Thursday. Mahua Moitra said the ethics committee was asking “filthy questions” when she was called to testify before the panel over claims of cash-for-query. “Is this an ethics committee?…reading from a script,” Mahua Moitra said.

Mahua Moitra responds angrily to a reporter’s question

Additionally, Moitra angrily remarked, “There are no tears in my eyes…making up any rubbish…’tears in your eyes,'” to a reporter. Are my eyes visible to you? Is it tearing at all?” In the meantime, Moitra was charged with using “unparliamentary language” by Vinod Sonkar, the chairman of the Parliament Ethics Committee.

Opposition members walk out of Ethics Committee meeting

“Instead of giving answers, she (Mahua Moitra) got angry and used unparliamentary language for the Chairperson, and Committee members. Danish Ali, Girdhari Yadav and other Opposition MPs tried to accuse the committee and walked out…The committee will sit and decide further action…,” Sonkar said. The opposition members of parliament who left the meeting claimed that Moitra was asked “unethical questions” by the panel. “We found the ethics committee chairperson’s questions to Moitra undignified and unethica,” N Uttam Kumar Reddy, a member of the Congress MP and panel, was cited by the news agency PTI.

Opposition MPs criticize committee’s line of questioning

“The whole line of questions it seems that he’s (Parliament Ethics Committee Chairman) acting on somebody’s behest. It is very, very bad. For two days we have been asking him some things…They are asking her (Mahua Moitra) where are you travelling? Where are you meeting? Can you give us your phone records?…” Congress MP Uttam Kumar Reddy said. Giridhari Yadav, a member of the Janata Dal (United), stated that Mahua Moitra “did not have the right to ask personal questions” by the panel. According to the PTI report, Mahua Moitra denied any wrongdoing and informed the parliamentary committee that advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai’s animosity towards her stemmed from the fact that she ended their personal relationship.

BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi accuses Moitra of using unparliamentary words

Mahua Moitra was accused by BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi of using “unparliamentary words” to refer to the ethics panel members, calling her actions “condemnable.” “The proceedings of the Parliamentary Standing Committee are confidential by nature. So the very thing that she (TMC MP Mahua Moitra) did was wrong. They all came out and they all said things about the committee, about the goings on within the committee, it was wrong. She should not have done that. These things are very confidential,” Sarangi said.

BJP leader criticizes Mahua Moitra’s conduct

The BJP leader added, “The conduct of Mahua Moitra was condemnable. She used unparliamentary words for our chairman and for all the members of the committee. So, the chairperson of the Committee was asking questions regarding the contents of the affidavit by Hiranandani and she did not want to answer them. And then they created a rucks.”

Accusation of Mahua Moitra accepting money for parliamentary questions

Mahua Moitra is accused of accepting money in exchange for asking questions in parliament. An MP from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wrote to Speaker Om Birla of the Lok Sabha last month, accusing Moitra of accepting money in exchange for raising issues in Parliament. Dubey referenced records provided by lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai Dehadrai of the Supreme Court. The Speaker then sent the matter to the BJP MP Vinod Kumar Sonkar’s ethics committee.
