Mamata Banerjee: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has blasted India’s election machinery. In a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Mamata said electors are being subjected to needless harassment and anxiety after being summoned for CEC hearings without being notified of the specific reasons.

What Did Mamata Banerjee Said?

The West Bengal CM wrote that the CEC must immediately make it a point to address and rectify the glitches to make the required corrections. She added that any failure should translate to immediate halt of this arbitrary, unplanned and ad-hoc exercise.

Mamata went on to add that it may cause large-scale disenfranchisement of eligible voters and irreparable damage. She went on to comment that this would be a direct and significant assault on the democratic governance’s foundational principles.

Banerjee further wrote that seriously ill, infirm and elderly citizens are not being spared. She said people are facing severe hardship as they are being compelled to travel for 20-25 kilometers to attend SIR hearings.
