Manipur Violence: Atleast 30 Killed, Situation Under Control Says Security Advisor

For the first time, official data has been released regarding the death toll in caste violence in Manipur. At least 30 people have died in ethnic clashes in Manipur since May 3, the new security advisor to the state government said.

However, unconfirmed reports put the count at over 100. Apart from this, more than 200 have been injured in the violence.

Meanwhile, life seemed to be returning to normal in Imphal Valley on Sunday as shops and markets reopened and cars plying on the roads. On the other hand, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju appealed for peace in the northeastern state as well as to start a dialogue between the ethnic communities.

Curfew relaxed for a few hours in Churachandpur

Curfew was relaxed for three hours in violence-hit Manipur's Churachandpur district on Sunday morning. During this time people bought essential items like medicine and food. The curfew imposed under section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) was relaxed from 7 am to 10 am. Earlier on Saturday also two hours relaxation was given from 3 pm to 5 pm.

The Indian Army and the Assam Rifles, called in to quell the violence in Manipur, have so far successfully rescued nearly 23,000 civilians and taken them to operating bases, an Indian Army statement said on Sunday. According to the statement, there has been no major incident of violence since the start of the rescue operation. This has resulted in relaxation of curfew hours, which are now from 7am to 10pm in Churachandpur.

The Meitei community constitutes about 53 per cent of the total population and mostly live in the Imphal Valley. The tribals include the Nagas and the Kukis and constitute about 40 per cent of the population and live mostly in the hill districts.

Meanwhile, a contingent of Assam Rifles has been directed to collect all Naga students in Imphal from select places to take them back to Kohima on Sunday. Officials said the official death toll is 54, of which 16 bodies have been kept at the mortuary of the Churachandpur district hospital, while 15 bodies have been kept at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal East district. The official said the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences at Lamphel in Imphal West district has reported 23 casualties.
