Married women in jail now allowed to wear Mangalsutra

New Delhi: As per to the provisions of the new jail manual, which will replace the state’s colonial-era rules, married women prisoners will soon be able to wear a “mangalsutra” and celebrate festivals such as Karva Chauth and Teej in Uttar Pradesh jails.
The Uttar Pradesh Jail Manual was approved by the state Cabinet earlier this week, removing redundant and ineffective provisions from the 1941 rule book.

According to state minister Dharamveer Prajapati, the new jail manual takes a more humane and sensitive approach to inmates, particularly women.

According to the new jail manual, married women inmates are permitted to wear their “mangalsutra” (sacred thread signifying their marital status). Previously, they could only wear reasonable-priced bangles, anklets, and nose pins.

Children born to imprisoned women will be registered at birth and receive all mandated vaccinations. Their naming ceremony may also be observed.

“I had gone to a jail recently where a child was born. The same day the naming ceremony was performed. The jail superintendent arranged for a Panditji and the ceremony,” Prajapati said.

Furthermore, education for children living in barracks with their mothers will be provided, and each jail will have a teacher.

Children’s parks are also being established to protect such children from being exposed to continuous discussions in the barracks about the crime committed by their mothers, according to the minister.

According to the minister, expectant and nursing mothers will receive comprehensive care as well as a more nutritious diet in addition to medical services.

Creches and nurseries for children living with their mothers, as well as proper sports, education, and entertainment arrangements, are included in the new jail manual.

Normal diet will include chutneys on all days, “kadhi-chawal” once a month, tea-biscuit every evening while bakeries will also be set up in jails.

Meetings with blood relatives and spouses in the jail will be permitted once a week, and phone calls will be permitted if the relatives are in separate jails.

Another significant change is that prisoners awaiting trial will no longer be handcuffed, chained, or kept in solitary confinement.
