MCD launches ‘zero waste’ campaign, focuses on ending landfill sites

MCD Waste management

MCD: In an attempt to make Delhi green, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has launched the ‘zero waste’ campaign. The campaign will focus on ending the mountains of garbage and landfills lite located in the national capital. Under this, the infamous Gazipur Bhalswa and Okhla of Delhi will also be cleaned. To materialize the pain, the civic body is scheduled to conduct meetings with  Resident Wing Associations (RWAs). The MCD has so far declared 127 colonies in the national capital as ‘zero waste zones’. The number is expected to rise further.

MCD’s zero waste campaign

MCD is committed to making Delhi clean. Its Zero Waste campaign has gained momentum with 127 zones declared as ‘no waste’ zone. Municipal Corporation of Delhi Commissioner Gynaesh Bharti said that solid waste management was a challenge for MCD to clear out, adding various efforts are being made to deal with it.

1000 tonnes of garbage is generated daily in Delhi, out of which only about 8,000 of garbage is disposed of. In this way, 4000 tonnes of waste is converted into legacy waste in the landfill site, which is definitely a matter of concern. To solve this problem, it is necessary that more and more zero waste colonies be made and the garbage should be disposed of separately at the source itself,” he explained.

Waste to art theme park

In another bid to manage garbage, MCD has also been developing waste-to-art parks and galleries across various locations. A Bollywood theme park is also being developed at Sarai Kale Khan with a budget of Rs 27 crore.

“The first attraction will be three movie sets of iconic movies such as Sholey. The galleries will also have sculptures of famous characters of artistes such as Dev Anand from his 1971 movie, Hare Krishna Hare Ram, and Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra from Sholey, among others,” one of the officials added, requesting anonymity.
