The advisory, dated April 26, 2025, emphasizes the need for responsible reporting and strict adherence to existing laws, including the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021.
"In the interest of national security, all media platforms, news agencies, and social media users are advised to exercise utmost responsibility and adhere strictly to existing laws and regulations while reporting on matters concerning defence and other security-related operations," the advisory stated.
No live coverage or real-time reporting of defence operations or troop movements.
No dissemination of visuals or "sources-based" sensitive information during ongoing operations.
Media reporting to be restricted to official briefings by designated government officers until operations conclude.
The ministry cited past incidents such as the Kargil War, the Mumbai terror attacks (26/11), and the Kandahar hijacking to highlight the risks posed by unrestricted media coverage, warning that premature disclosure of sensitive details could inadvertently assist hostile elements and endanger lives.
TV channels were specifically reminded of Rule 6(1)(p) of the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021, which prohibits live coverage of anti-terror operations. Violations would invite action under the relevant provisions, the ministry warned.
Apart from the legal obligations, the ministry stressed the "shared moral responsibility" of media and digital platforms in safeguarding national security by maintaining vigilance, sensitivity, and responsibility in their coverage.
The advisory was issued with the approval of the competent authority in the Ministry and signed by Deputy Director Kshitij Aggarwal.
