Mehli Mistry Joins Tata Trusts as Trustee, and the Search for Srinath’s Replacement Continues

Mehli Mistry: Mehli Mistry, the cousin of former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry, has been proposed as a trustee by Tata Trusts, the holding corporation for all Tata Group firms. Separately, the trusts have started looking for a new CEO after N Srinath announced his retirement this month.
Mehli Mistry, a director of the Meherji Pallonji Group, has been appointed as a trustee of the group’s two principal trusts, the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust. Mistry has additionally been chosen to serve as a trustee for the Tata Education and Development Trust.

Since 2014, Mehli has served as a trustee at Tata Medical Centre, which oversees the oncology hospital in Kolkata. The mothers of Mehli and Cyrus are related. Mehli, a Ratan Tata supporter, was also caught in the crossfire of the conflict between Tata and Mistry after Cyrus was fired from his position as chairman of Tata Sons.

This month, Srinath—who has worked for the Tata Group for more than 36 years—will retire on superannuation.

In addition to the trust’s ongoing investments in livelihoods, water and sanitation, education, cancer care, and health, he was instrumental in developing the medical infrastructure, such as hospital beds and oxygen capability, throughout his time with Tata Trusts.

In addition to holding executive positions at Tata Administrative Services, Tata Internet Services, Tata Communications Limited (formerly VSNL), and Tata Teleservices, he had joined Tata Administrative Services in 1986.

Following a search for the newly created position when R Venkataramanan resigned as the managing trustee in 2019, Tata Trusts chose group veteran Srinath as its first CEO, effective April 1, 2020. Until a new CEO is chosen, the Tata Trusts trustees will be in charge of managing the charitable organization’s operations.

Ratan N. Tata is the chairman of Tata Trusts, which includes Sir Ratan Tata Trust, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, and affiliated trusts. Ratan N. Tata served as the chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company for the Tata group, from 1991 until his retirement on December 28, 2012.

Currently serving as vice chairs of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust are retired government servant Vijay Singh and chairman emeritus of TVS Motor Company Venu Srinivasan. The Lady Tata Memorial Trust, JRD Tata Trust, Jamsetji Tata Trust, Tata Social Welfare Trust, and JN Tata Endowment are among its affiliated trusts.

Tata Education and Development Trust, Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust, Bai Hirabai J. N. Tata Navsari Charitable Institution, and Sarvajanik Seva Trust are affiliated trusts with Sir Ratan Tata Trust.
