Merger or Support? Sharad Pawar Group MPs Meet PM Modi, Will Delimitation Bill Pass Smoothly?

All eight Members of Parliament from the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) faction met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, as repeated disruptions kept several pressing issues off the floor of the House. The delegation used the meeting, held at the Parliamentary office, to raise concerns specific to Maharashtra.

Sule Says Delimitation Stand Premature

NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule, who confirmed the appointment, said it was too early to take a position on the proposed Delimitation Bill. She added that the party would consult its INDI Alliance partners once the draft legislation is formally tabled in Parliament, rather than reacting in isolation.

Why the Timing Matters

The meeting comes as the Centre works to build broader political support for the Delimitation Bill, which the government is expected to reintroduce during the ongoing Monsoon Session. With eight MPs, NCP (SP) is seen as a relevant bloc for the government’s numbers in Parliament, adding weight to speculation about the party’s eventual stance.

Merger Speculation Resurfaces

The visit has also revived talk of a possible political realignment. Reports suggest a section within NCP (SP) favours closer ties with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). However, BJP sources have reportedly indicated that any formal alliance with Sharad Pawar’s faction would only be considered if it reunites with the rival NCP group led by Ajit Pawar, ruling out individual entries without a full merger.

With Opposition parties intensifying protests inside and outside Parliament, the Pawar camp’s outreach to the PM has sharpened questions about where NCP (SP) will eventually stand, both on delimitation and on any future political alignment. No official statement has confirmed a shift in the party’s position so far.
