Minister Giriraj Singh bats for population control bill for all religions

Population control bill: Union Rural Development Minister Giriraj Singh on Sunday asserted that it is very crucial to have a population control bill in place as India has limited resources. He gave an example of China and said that the neighbouring country implemented ‘one child policy’ in 1979 and has developed itself.

He said, “Population control bill is crucial, we have limited resources. China implemented ‘one child policy’, controlled the population and achieved development. China has ten children born a minute while India has 30 children born a minute, how will we compete with China?”

Favours uniform implementation

“The bill should be implemented on everybody irrespective of religion or section and those who don’t follow shouldn’t be given government benefits. Their voting rights should also be taken,” he said.

Though many BJP leaders have been demanding a law to check the rising population growth in the country, the Health Ministry in August this year said that it was not considering any such proposal.

Earlier on Friday, Giriraj Singh said any violence against women should not be seen through the prism of religion and such incidents should be condemned outright without any prejudice.

Don’t assess women on religion

“People today discuss (various issues) in the world of television. But, it is unfortunate for India’s polity that daughters’ pain is assessed on the basis of their religion,” he said.

“I am witnessing today that some women speak up (against gender-based violence) while others do not because people make political remarks (on their sufferings) based on the religion of these didis (elder sisters),” the minister for rural development and panchayati raj said.

“Any violence against women should not be seen through the prism of religion and it should be condemned outrightly by all without any prejudice,” Singh said in a statement later.
