Parliament convened for the Monsoon Session today, with already high political anxiety increased as early as last week. It was evident that there were serious cracks in the opposition unity before the Monsoon Session commenced. Leading up to the session, the strategic meeting of the key leaders in the INDIA bloc took place but clearly didn't serve to cultivate the unity required; for instance, Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee were absent from the important meeting, and just to add further confusion to the mix, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) made a formal withdrawal from the INDIA bloc, which again dilutes the strength of the opposition when they were supposed to be focused on multiple national issues in order to face the ruling BJP.

Weak or not, the opposition still intends to take on the government aggressively. With the BJP-led NDA attempting to defend its record and push through legislation, here are the five issues likely to dominate the floor in Parliament:

1. Pahalgam Terror Attack and J&K Security Situation

The Pahalgam attack, which resulted in the loss of multiple soldiers, has once again catalyzed the debate on national security, and the Opposition is demanding a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

2. Donald Trump’s Ceasefire Claim – Operation Sindoor

Former President Donald Trump’s declaration that he played a role in brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan - known as Operation Sindoor—has caused a stir. The Opposition is demanding that the government clarify whether there was any involvement.

3. Bihar Voter List Revision

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar’s electoral roll has created a flashpoint at the national level, with detractors alleging it will disenfranchise already marginalized voters. Opposition parties have criticized the Center for politicizing the electoral process ahead of the state elections.

4. Manipur and Ethnic Violence

The ongoing violence in Manipur, which has been exceedingly concerning, has rocked the nation. Following one year of unrest, the opposition is demanding a serious debate with the Union Government.

5. Demand for Restoration of J&K Statehood and Ladakh Safeguards

The Congress Party and other regional parties are continuing to push for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir statehood and the provision of constitutional safeguards for Ladakh.
