The government wants to take all the precaution to reduce road accidents as more mishaps than covid-19 have been reported in the last one year due to road accidents, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Thursday.
Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha, the Union Minister said that the government is very much concerned about road accidents and will take all the possible measures to reduce such incidents.
"Our government is serious about reducing road accidents… 1.5 lakh people died due to road accidents in the last one year which is more than 1.46 lakhs deaths due to covid-19," he said.
He further informed that most of the people who died due to road accident in the last year were in the age group of 18-35.
According to a recent report of World Bank, India has suffered the most number of road accidents globally. Statistically, 1.5 lakh people have been killed and more than 4.5 lakh have been cripples annually in 4.5 lakh road accidents which led to 3.14 per cent loss of GDP.
