The founder-patron of Samajwadi Party, Mulayam, was groomed by leaders such as Ram Manohar Lohia and Raj Narain. Mulayam had served ten terms as a MLA in Uttar Pradesh Assembly, before he went onto become a MP ( served seven terms as a MP).

During the much talked Emergency, Mulayam was arrested and kept in custody for 19 months. He eventually became a state minister in 1977. He was then shortly made the party president of Lok Dal. He rose to more fame in 1982, when he became the leader of opposition in UP Legislative council.

After the split in Lok Dal party, he launched a new party named 'Krantikari Morcha'.

Road to Chief Minsitership and More

After being a senior leader for such a long time, he first became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1989. However, his government fell when INC withdrew their support. Eventually, when the elections happened in 1991, he lost to BJP.

In the year 1992, he founded Samajwadi Party and allied with BSP and eventually won the election. He became the CM with the support of Congress and Janta Dal. However, his stand on Uttarakhand being a separate state earned a lot of criticism. However, his govt. fell again when his ally left in 1995.

Later in 2003, BJP and BSP won the election and a govt. was formed under Mayawati's rule, who was termed as the biggest rival of Mulayam. But BJP opted out of the alliance and Yadav then became the CM with the support of enough rebel MLAs of BSP and many other independent MLAs. At the same time, he also won the Lok Sabha election from Mainpuri but to continue the role of CM he had to resign.

Later in 2012, his party won with the majority, but his son was made the CM of the state.
