He said that the police have recovered Rs 2 lakh in cash, nine mobile phones, 32 ATM cards of different banks, check books and four SIM cards from the accused. According to the official, the fraud came to light when a victim approached the cyber police and informed about it. It was claimed on his part that he had lost Rs 17.82 lakh. He had lodged the complaint in August last year.

He said investigation revealed that 835 mobile numbers and 38 IEMI numbers were used to dupe people. A mobile number used in the crime was named in 10 crimes registered in Mumbai involving fraud of Rs 53.74 lakh.

The same mobile number had cropped up in 577 complaints of cheating and 269 cases registered in Maharashtra, the official said. According to the police, the complainant wanted to sell his old furniture and had posted the pictures on an online marketplace application. The officer said that the accused person contacted the victim in response to the advertisement and asked her to send her bank details to make the payment and also sent a QR code scanner.

Thereafter, the accused transferred Rs 9,000 to the victim. But after some time the fraudster asked him to return the money by transferring it to two bank accounts. In the process, the accused managed to access the bank account of the victim and swindled Rs 17.82 lakh from him, he said.

The FIR was registered at North Zone Cyber ​​Police Station under sections 419, 420 (cheating) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology (IT) Act.
