Mumbai rains: Local trains, offices shut in the city; IMD issues two days red alert

Mumbai recorded heavy rainfall that thrashed the city satellite cities, the suburbs and the coastal North Konkan belt on Tuesday. The local trains, a lifeline for Mumbai's 20 million residents, have been stopped in the city due to flooding on rail tracks.

"Due to high tide resulting in water-logging at Wadala and Parel, suburban services are suspended on main line and harbour line. However, shuttle services are running between Vashi and Panvel, and Thane and Kalyan," Central Railway's Chief Public Relation Officer Shivaji Sutar tweeted.

All offices in the city, except emergency services will stay closed on Tuesday. Bombay high court suspended all hearing due to rains. Matters will be heard tomorrow.

Mumbai and some other distrcits are currently on red alert for "extremely heavy rainfall". Apart from Mumbai, the alert has been issued for Thane, Pune, Raigad and Ratnagiri districts of Maharashtra.

"Stay home! We've been monitoring the situation and the @mybmc is working round the clock. Please cooperate and stay home," Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray tweeted.

Roads in areas such as Goregaon, King Circle, Hindmata, Dadar, Shivaji Chowk, Shell Colony, Kurla ST Depot, Bandra Talkies, Sion Road have been flooded, Heavy overnight rain has caused a landslide on the Western Express Highway in suburbam Kandivali early Tuesday morning, affecting the movement of vehicles in the city, the officials said.

The India Metrological Department recorded 268.8mm of rain in Mumbai's Santacruz, 252.2mm in Colaba and 174mm in Basai on Tuesday.

230mm rainfall occurred within 10 hours. It's a flood-like situation. Mithi river had swelled up in the morning because of heavy rains, crossing the danger mark. As of now, it is flowing below danger level. The evacuation of people has also been stopped right now, BMC commissioner said.

"One person was electrocuted accidentally this morning after he touched an electric pole in Thane", news agency Press Trust of India quoted the police as saying.

With continuous rainfall all through the night, flood-like situation has emerged in the financial capital. The weather department has issued a red alert for today and tomorrow for extremely heavy rain in the city.
