Mumbai records highest rainfall of the season, PM Modi assures support

Heavy rains thrashed Maharashtra’s capital city Mumbai and its neighbouring areas on Wednesday. A red alert was issued for extremely heavy rainfall in the city for two days — Tuesday and Wednesday.

South Mumbai’s Colaba area recorded its heaviest single-day rainfall in August in 46 years on Wednesday. Rains and cyclonic winds reaching speeds of up to 107kmph hit the city and its neighbouring areas, disrupting the local life in the metropolitan. The area recorded 331.8mm rainfall over a period of 24 hours starting 8.30am Wednesday.

Train and bus services remained shut as the heavy rains caused flood like situation on the suburban tracks. All work places except essential services were also closed.

Bombay High Court has suspended all proceedings for the day on account of incessant rains. This is for the second time in a week as court hearings were suspended on Tuesday as well following heavy rains.

PM Narendra Modi spoke to Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray regarding the situation manifesting in Mumbai and surrounding areas due to heavy rainfall and assured all the possible support.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray asked people to stay indoors and venture out only for essential work. The Shiv Sena leader has directed Mumbai’s civic body officials to stay on high alert.

Mumbai has already received 64 percent of its monthly share of rain in just first five days of August. Mumbai received the highest rainfall of the season within just 12 hours yesterday besides the highest-ever wind speed, the city civic body said. 

“The Fire Brigade and its flood rescue teams are deployed at half a dozen Regional Reconciliation Centres with the required manpower and equipment. Three units of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were also active and they have been asked to be ready for immediate help in case of an emergency,” the BMC said.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai may seem less intense rains today. “Reduction in activity is expected from tomorrow onwards as per the IMD global forecast system model guidance. The IMD will update about it tomorrow,”” said K S Hosalikar, deputy director general of IMD, Mumbai.
