‘My Name is Gandhi, Not Savarkar,’ Rahul Gandhi’s Bold Statement Sparks Controversy, BJP Leader Anurag Thakur Slams Comment

Anurag Thakur: Rahul Gandhi remarked on Saturday, following his expulsion from the Lok Sabha, “My name is not Savarkar, my name is Gandhi and Gandhi does not offer an apology to anyone.” Anurag Thakur of the Bharatiya Janata Party responded, “Rahul Gandhi can’t be Savarkar, even in the best of his dreams,” to the remark made by the Congress leader. Anurag Thakur, a union minister and BJP leader, claimed that Rahul Gandhi had insulted not only Savarkar but also Indira Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, and even Mahatma Gandhi in a series of tweets on Sunday.

Here are Anurag Thakur’s words:

  • Rahul disparages Veer Savarkar, a liberation warrior whose book “India’s First Freedom Struggle” was translated into Punjabi and issued after Bhagat Singh Ji personally travelled to Ratnagiri to see Veer Savarkar. Bhagat Singh made notes in his notebook before his execution from Savarkar’s literature, and only a dumb person could disparage Savarkar, he wrote.
  • Savarkar ji did not acquire this respect overnight, according to Anurag Thakur. All the influential figures of that time bowed down before the bravery and patriotism of Savarkar Ji. In the Kakinada session of 1923, even the Congress had voted a resolution in support of Savarkar Ji.
  • Anurag Thakur posted a picture of a stamp with Savarkar’s portrait on it. He said that the stamp was created to honour Veer Savarkar’s contributions to the Indian independence cause while Indira Gandhi served as prime minister.
  • A letter from the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi thanking Veer Savarkar for his “fight and contribution for the freedom movement of India” was also presented by the BJP leader.
  • Anurag Thakur tweeted a link to a YouTube video. He stated, “When Indira Gandhi Ji was the Prime Minister of India, a documentary on Veer Savarkar Ji was released by the Government of India to acknowledge his valour, sacrifice, and selfless service to the nation.”
  • He continued, “His (Rahul Gandhi’s) grandmother used to do all this to honour Veer Savarkar. No significant figure of the time ever had anything negative to say about Savarkar. Rahul Gandhi is saying all of this right now. Not just Savarkar, but also Netaji Bose, Bhagat Singh, Gandhiji, and his grandmother (Indira Gandhi) are being insulted by him.
