NCERT Panel Recommends Replacing “India” with “Bharat” in School Textbooks

NCERT

A panel dedicated to social sciences, appointed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), has proposed a change in school textbooks, suggesting that the name “India” be replaced with “Bharat.”

The committee, led by CI Isaac, conveyed that this recommendation was unanimously supported by all seven members of the high-level committee. This proposal is also included in the final position paper on social sciences drafted by the panel.

Rationale behind this change:

CI Isaac explained the rationale behind this change, mentioning that the term “India” became prevalent after the establishment of the East India Company and the battle of Plassey in 1757. In contrast, the use of the term “Bharat” dates back more than 5,000 years. Given this historical context, the entire panel, consisting of seven experts, concurred on advocating the use of “Bharat” in textbooks for students across all classes.

Reaction of RJD MP Manoj Jha

Reacting to the recommendation RJD MP Manoj Jha says, “…Ever since the birth of the INDIA alliance, several reactions have been coming from BJP leaders…They are not able to figure out how to attack the INDIA alliance…I believe this is a hysterical reaction. Now NCERT is doing this. What will you do with Article 1 which says India that is Bharat. I am not able to understand the meaning of any of this…If the INDIA alliance changes its name to Bharat, then what will they do?…”
