NCPCR Chairman: Priyank Kanoongo, chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), accused a senior police inspector of manhandling and punching him at the Tiljala police station in Kolkata on Friday to investigate the alleged murder of a seven-year-old child. After a seven-year-old child was stolen and slain by a neighbour in Kolkata's Tiljala neighbourhood a few days ago, the NCPCR took notice and wrote to the DGP of West Bengal Police. On Friday, the NCPCR chairman visited the Tiljala police station and met with the investigating officer about the murder case.

The police officers present violently confiscated Kanungo's camera

According to police sources, policemen on the scene prevented Kanungo from taking the camera inside the police station. According to Inspector Biswak Mukherjee, "I apologised and told him that he may delete the tape but not take the camera with him as per policy. This time, the honourable chairperson took the camera by force." According to the officer-in-charge, the police officers present violently confiscated Kanungo's camera. Never happy with our Bengal visits-NCPCR chairwoman

"Biswak Mukherjee is a highly senior inspector and well recognised for his exemplary performance in the force," a top officer from the Kolkata Police said. This is an unfounded accusation levelled against the senior inspector. If someone like him (Kanungo) makes such a bogus accusation, it is very sad and regrettable." The NCPCR chairwoman said a day before his scheduled visit that the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) is "never happy with our Bengal visits" and that the state body communicated to him that his "visit is not really necessary."
