Nehru’s Anti-Reservation Views Unmasked by PM Modi, Says ‘He Was Against….’

Examine the historical disclosure as Prime Minister Narendra Modi presents a letter to chief ministers from Jawaharlal Nehru that reveals Nehru's adamant opposition to reservation in any form.

PM Modi: Jawaharlal Nehru did not support any form of reservation in employment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed on Wednesday, claiming that the Congress had always been against Dalits, backwards, and tribal people. Modi read aloud a letter sent by former Prime Minister Nehru to the chief ministers at the time in response to the Rajya Sabha’s motion of thanks over the President’s speech.

Empowerment through Education

“I am reading out its translation: ‘I dislike any kind of reservation, more particularly in services. I am strongly against anything which leads to inefficiency and second-rate standards’,” PM Modi said.

“That is why I say that they are against it (reservation) by birth… Had the government recruited at that time and promoted them from time to time, they would have been here today,” the Prime Minister further said. In his letter to chief ministers on June 27, 1961, Jawaharlal Nehru emphasised the need of empowering marginalised communities by providing them with high-quality education rather than by reserving positions based on caste. This is what PM Modi was alluding to.

Congress and Social Justice

Additionally, PM Modi stated that the Congress should not advocate for social justice because it never granted OBCs full reservation. “The Congress, which never gave complete reservation to OBCs, never gave reservation to the poor of the general category, which did not consider Baba Saheb worthy of Bharat Ratna, kept giving Bharat Ratna only to its family. They are now preaching and teaching us the lesson of social justice. Those who have no guarantee as a leader are raising questions about Modi’s guarantee,” PM Modi said.

Modi’s Recurrent Critique

For the second time in three days, Prime Minister Modi has attacked the Congress by citing Nehru. Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Monday, Prime Minister Modi stated that Jawaharlal Nehru believed Indians were less intelligent and lethargic than Americans and Chinese people.

Modi’s Red Fort Revelation

“Let me read what Prime Minister Nehru had said from the Red Fort. ‘Indians generally do not have the habit of working very hard, we do not work as much as the people of Europe or Japan or China or Russia or America’,” PM Modi had said. Along with mentioning the past prime minister’s observation that Indians flee hardship, PM Modi remarked that Indira Gandhi thought similarly.
