India's ED on Thursday said fugitive businessman Nirav Modi's sister has "remitted" over ₹17 crore from a UK bank account to that of the Indian government after she was allowed pardon from criminal proceedings in lieu of extending help in the PNB loan fraud case.

Mumbai court in January granted ‘tender of pardon’

A Mumbai court in January granted ‘tender of pardon’ in the case to Purvi Modi alias Purvi Mehta (47) and her husband Maiank Mehta as both were made approvers on the condition that they make full and true disclosure. Both Purvi and Maiank are British citizens and they never joined the probe.

“On June 24, Purvi informed the ED that she had received the knowledge of one bank account in London, UK in her name, which was opened at the behest of her brother Nirav Modi and that the funds did not belong to her."

"As Purvi was allowed tender of pardon on conditions of making full and true disclosure, she remitted an amount of $23,16,889.03 from her UK bank account to the bank account of the government of India, Directorate of Enforcement,” ED said in a statement. The ED also said that it recovered about ₹17.25 crore from the proceeds of the crime with the cooperation of Purvi Modi.

Nirav Modi is currently in UK Jail

Nirav Modi is currently lodged in an UK jail, after his lost his appeal against extradition to India to face trial in the PNB bank scam. In February this year, The UK’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court had ordered the extradition to India, and the same was approved by the British Home Minister in April. Last month, a UK high court rejected his appeal against the extradition order.

Nirav Modi is accused in two criminal cases

Nirav Modi is accused in two criminal cases. First is the USD 2 billion PNB scam slapped on the diamantaire by the CBI. Second, the ED case relating to the laundering of the proceeds of that bank fraud.
