The road transport scenario in India is set to change drastically as Union Minister Nitin Gadkari recently made major announcements about the changes to be made to the FASTag system. The new reforms, designed to improve the toll collection process and curb fraud, are designed with a vision to make Indian highways smarter, faster, and more convenient for mass commuters across the country.

Speaking in a tweet released by Hindi News today, Gadkari said there is a need for advanced systems where the system collects tolls smoothly, prevents unfair practices, and monitors vehicles in real-time.

What’s Changing with FASTag?

Gadkari also confirmed that the government is developing a new GPS-based system under which a new method of toll collection will soon substitute the current RFID-tag system. The next-gen system would automatically charge the tolls depending on the distance covered, and thus there would be no need to have traditional toll parking stations.

In the present scenario, more than 8 crore FASTags have been issued, and they have significantly reduced the wait time in toll plazas. Nevertheless, problems such as inappropriate use of tags, false tags, and inappropriateness in the categories of vehicles still bother the system. The upgrade being proposed shall have the effect of stopping these loopholes and making its procedures more transparent.

Benefits for Commuters and the Economy

When implemented, the GPS-based system will:

  • Lower the traffic at toll stations.
  • Limit human touch and manual error.
  • Legalize dynamic tolling due to usage of the road.
  • Increase the traffic planning in infrastructure planning.

This transformation that involves the use of technology, according to Gadkari, may better revenue generation, reduce corruption, and facilitate the ease of travel of millions of Indian drivers.

This new system is still being pilot-tested on some selected highways, and an all-out implementation will be done depending on the outcome.

A Digital Step Forward

By doing so, India plans to join the ranks of countries that use fully automated satellite tolling, making it possible to travel on highways at a smoother and faster pace. This update is also in line with other initiatives taken by the government towards digital infrastructure and intelligent transport systems.

With the changes, commuters are advised to keep their FASTag active and updated to avoid any hassles.
