Nitin Nabin Named BJP Working President, Signals Generational Shift in Party Leadership

Significantly, Nabin is also the first BJP chief from Bihar and eastern India, underlining the party’s strategic push to strengthen its footprint in the eastern states.

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday appointed Bihar minister Nitin Nabin as its new working president, a move widely seen as a step towards his eventual elevation as the party’s national chief. The decision comes amid expectations that Nabin could succeed JP Nadda, who has been leading the BJP since 2020.

At 45, Nitin Nabin becomes the youngest BJP chief ever, bringing together a rare combination of youth and extensive political experience. Party insiders noted that despite his age, Nabin is already a five-time MLA and has built a strong administrative profile by handling key ministerial portfolios.

Sources within the BJP said the appointment reflects the party’s emphasis on capable, performance-driven leadership and marks a clear generational transition within the organisation. Significantly, Nabin is also the first BJP chief from Bihar and eastern India, underlining the party’s strategic push to strengthen its footprint in the eastern states.

JP Nadda, 65, completed his full term as BJP president earlier and was expected to be replaced in 2023. However, he was given extensions to steer the party through the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which delayed the leadership transition.

Party leaders have credited Nabin with delivering strong results during his tenure as a minister and for his role as the BJP’s in-charge of Chhattisgarh, describing his performance as “outstanding.” Currently, he holds the Road Construction as well as Urban Development and Housing portfolios in the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government.

With this appointment, the BJP has sent a clear signal of continuity combined with renewal, positioning Nitin Nabin as a key leader in the party’s future national strategy.
