In a tragic twist of fate, Robin Naiya, a 35-year-old man presumed dead in the recent train accident in Odisha, was discovered alive among the deceased. During the rescue operation, Robin had been relocated to a school room in Balasore, Odisha, where the bodies of hundreds of accident victims were stored.
Despite the grim circumstances, Robin's survival instinct persevered as he clutched a rescuer's leg and pleaded for water. He was promptly transferred to a hospital. While Robin, a resident of Charnekhali village in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas, lost his legs in the accident, his life was spared.
The Devastating Consequences of the Mishap
The catastrophic railway incident in Odisha, which occurred on the 2nd of June, claimed a minimum of 278 lives and left more than 1,100 people injured. Since the latest report, the death toll has tragically risen by three additional fatalities.
The Search for Work Ends in Tragedy
Robin, along with seven others from his village, was travelling on the Coromandel Express from Howrah to Andhra Pradesh in search of work when the catastrophic collision occurred. At present, his condition is critical, and he is under intensive care in the orthopaedic department of Medinipur Medical College Hospital.
Robin's Heartbreaking Account
According to Robin's uncle, Manabendra Sardar, Robin regained consciousness among a pile of bodies and seized the leg of a rescuer, pleading for water. Only then was it discovered that he was still alive.
Tragedy Strikes Again
This is not the first time the Naiya family has encountered such a tragic incident. In 2010, another family member survived the Jnaneshwari Express derailment in West Midnapore, which claimed 148 lives. Tragically, six of Robin's friends who were with him on the train remain missing.
