Plea Prevails! Qatar Court Accepts India’s Appeal, Delays Death Sentence for Navy Veterans

Qatar News Indian Navy: The Indian government’s appeal regarding the death sentence imposed on eight former Indian Navy personnel by a court last month was accepted by a Qatar court on Thursday. The next hearing is anticipated soon, the court stated, citing their analysis of the appeal, according to sources who spoke with India Today.

MEA’s Response to the Judgment

After being held in the nation for more than a year, a court in Qatar sentenced up to eight former members of the Indian Navy to death in October. The MEA on Thursday (November 23) said, “The judgment is confidential. There is a court of first instance that gave the judgment, which was shared with our legal team. Considering all legal options, an appeal has been filed. We are in touch with the Qatari authorities.”

Arindam Bagchi’s Communication on Navy Officers’ Detention

Spokesman for the External Affairs Ministry Arindam Bagchi stated that India is in communication with the Qatari authorities regarding the issue and that the government will keep providing the former Navy personnel with all legal and consular support. Eight former Indian Navy officers were detained by Qatar in August 2022 on suspicion of serving as spies for Israel while they were employed by a Middle Eastern company.

On August 30, 2022, the Qatari intelligence agency detained the former officers, who included Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, and Sailor Ragesh. They were all from Doha. The Qatari authorities repeatedly turned down the Navy veterans’ bail requests. In October of this year, the Court of First Instance of Qatar announced the implementation of the death penalty.
