PM Modi chairs high-level meeting to review covid surge

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday chaired a high-level meeting with health officials to review Covid-19 surge that the country has been witnessing for past three weeks. This comes as on Sunday, the country recorded 93,249 new cases, the highest single-day spike since September 2020, taking the total tally of infected people in the country to 1,24,85,509.

The meeting also the presence of high officials including Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, Principal Secretary to PM P.K. Mishra, Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan, and Vinod Paul, NITI Aayog member and chairman of government’s empowered group on Covid management.

India’s covid-19 curve started flattening in late February with the country recording lowest active caseload on February 12 at 1,35,926. In just few weeks, the active caseload has now risen to 6,91,597 as the covid-19 cases in few states and union territories continue to mount.

To curb the infection rate, Centre has advised high-burden states and union territories to take stringent measures for containment of the surge.

In view of the continuous surge in many states, school and colleges have been shut. Some states have also made it mandatory for people to travel with negative covid-19 reports.

Maharashtra has emerged as the grave concern as the state has been reporting an abated rise in daily number of cases and fatalities. On Friday, chief minister Uddhav Thackeray had addressed the citizens wherein he had said that the state could see lockdown anytime if people fail to curb the spread. The CM had said that he will be taking a decision on lockdown in two days.

Delhi, too, has seen spike in daily number of cases. While chief minister has said that no lockdown will be enforced in the national capital as of now, the didn’t rule our its possibility completely.

Punjab, Karnataka, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Haryana are other states to record surge in daily cases.
