ASEAN-India Summit: In order to attend the ASEAN-India and East Asia summits, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flew into Indonesia on Thursday morning. At the ASEAN-India Summit in Jakarta, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said, “Last year we celebrated the India-ASEAN friendship day and gave it a form of comprehensive strategic partnership. Our partnership has reached the fourth decade. It is an honour for me to co-chair this Summit. I want to congratulate Indonesian President Joko Widodo for organising this Summit.”
PM Modi’s Vision at ASEAN-India Summit
“Our (India-Indonesia) partnership is entering its fourth decade. At such a time, co-chairing the ASEAN-India Summit is a matter of pride for me,” said PM Modi. PM Narendra Modi also urged strengthening the voice of the Global South and creating a post-Covid international order at the summit. He also emphasised the importance of maintaining an open and free Indo-Pacific. PM Modi informed the group’s leaders that India agrees with the ASEAN perspective on the Indo-Pacific. According to the Prime Minister, ASEAN is the centre of growth and is essential to the advancement of the world. Asia’s century is the twenty-first century. He said that it was our century together. Modi’s 12-point strategy for enhancing Asean-India collaboration spans topics including connectivity, digital public infrastructure (DPI), and counterterrorism. It plans to build commercial ties between India, Southeast Asia, West Asia, and Europe as well as multimodal connectivity. Additionally, it called for cooperation in disaster management, a coordinated effort to combat terrorism, the financing of terrorism, and cyber misinformation, as well as increased cooperation in marine safety, security, and domain awareness. Traditional medicine, India’s Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) are other strategies that are part of the strategy.
Launching the ‘ASEAN-India Fund for Digital Future’ and Sharing DPI Expertise
In accordance with the concept, India launched a “Asean-India fund for digital future” and offered to share its DPI knowledge with Asean partners. The Economic Research Institute for Asean and East Asia (ERIA) was further declared as receiving renewed funding from the Indian side. The Indian side urged bringing up concerns affecting the Global South as a group at multilateral forums and offered to contribute its knowledge of supplying affordable, high-quality medicines through Jan-Aushadhi Kendras.
PM Modi’s Vision for a Post-Covid World
The creation of a post-Covid international order based on laws and efforts by all (Sabka Prayas) for human welfare will be advantageous to us all, according to PM Modi. Despite the general sense of insecurity around the world, the prime minister claimed that “our mutual cooperation” has continued to advance. The Act East strategy of India is centred on ASEAN, he continued. From ASEAN-India Summit to G20 Leadership
The Prime Minister will attend the 18th East Asia Summit after the ASEAN-India Summit before returning to Delhi, where India will host the G20 Summit on September 9 and 10. PM Modi claimed that the comprehensive strategic cooperation between India and ASEAN has given the association’s relations with New Delhi a new energy before he left New Delhi. “Engagement with ASEAN is an important pillar of India’s ‘Act East’ policy,” PM Modi said in his departure statement. “This forum provides a useful opportunity to deliberate on issues of importance to the region including food and energy security, environment, health, and digital transformation. I look forward to exchanging views with other EAS Leaders on practical cooperation measures to collectively address these global challenges,” he said.
