Addressing a gathering in Mahabubnagar, PM Modi emphasized the growing awareness and global demand for turmeric, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. He stressed the importance of professional attention and a comprehensive approach to the entire turmeric value chain, spanning from production to export. This led to the central government’s decision to establish a dedicated National Turmeric Board.

PM Modi Announces Formation of National Turmeric Board During Telangana Visit; Dedicates Developmental Projects Worth Rs 13,500 Crore

India is renowned as a major producer, consumer, and exporter of turmeric, with Telangana being a significant contributor to this sector. Regions such as Nizamabad, Nirmal, and Jagtial in Telangana are known for extensive turmeric cultivation. They are not only major suppliers to domestic markets but also export finger and bulb varieties of turmeric abroad.

In addition to the National Turmeric Board, India already has similar boards for various other commodities such as tea, coffee, spices, jute, and coconut. These boards play a crucial role in helping farmers market their produce and addressing their various needs.

During his visit, PM Modi also dedicated and laid the foundation stone for multiple developmental projects valued at over Rs 13,500 crore. These projects span important sectors like road infrastructure, railways, petroleum and natural gas, and higher education. Furthermore, he flagged off a new train service, the Hyderabad (Kacheguda) – Raichur – Hyderabad (Kacheguda) route from Krishna station, providing crucial rail connectivity to previously underserved areas in Telangana and Karnataka. This initiative is expected to benefit students, daily commuters, laborers, and the local handloom industry in the region.
