Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the 13th BRICS Summit on Thursday in a virtual format, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Wednesday.

Brazil President Jair Bolsanaro, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping will be in attendance at the meeting. For this year, the theme for the Summit is ‘BRICS@15: Intra-BRICS cooperation for continuity, consolidation and consensus’

The meet will also see the presence of India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, President of the New Development Bank Marcos Troyjo, the pro tempore chair of the BRICS Business Council, Onkar Kanwar and pro tempore Chair of the BRICS Women’s Business Alliance, Sangita Reddy.

The leaders from across the globe are expected to discuss the situation that has emerged in Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover of Kabul.  Sources familiar with developments of the BRICS summit told ANI that the leaders will also have a mutual discussion on important global and regional issues including Afghanistan, on which leaders are likely to underscore the priority of fighting terrorism.

Additionally, the leaders will also exchange views on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and other current global and regional issues, the MEA said.
Russia had hosted the last BRICS meeting.
