Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the final 10.99-kilometre stretch of Mumbai’s first fully underground metro corridor — the Aqua Line (Metro Line 3) — on Wednesday during his two-day visit to Maharashtra. This final section, connecting Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade, will make the entire 33.5-km route operational, marking a major milestone in Mumbai’s public transport infrastructure.
PM Modi to Inaugurate Mumbai’s First Fully Underground Metro Line and Navi Mumbai Airport During Two-Day Maharashtra Visit
The Aqua Line, stretching from Cuffe Parade in South Mumbai to Aarey JVLR in Goregaon, is a 100% underground corridor aimed at decongesting the city’s traffic and enhancing last-mile connectivity. With the commissioning of this final phase, commuters will now be able to travel seamlessly across all three sections — Aarey JVLR to BKC, BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk, and Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade.
The final segment will feature 11 new underground stations, strategically located to serve South Mumbai’s heritage areas, major government offices, and financial districts. Built at an estimated cost of ₹12,195 crore, the project is expected to significantly cut travel time and reduce vehicular pollution in the city.
PM Modi will also inaugurate the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) — a long-awaited infrastructure project
During the visit, PM Modi will also inaugurate the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) — a long-awaited infrastructure project designed to decongest the existing Mumbai airport and boost regional connectivity. Developed on a 1,160-hectare site, NMIA’s first phase will handle 20 million passengers annually and 0.8 million metric tonnes of cargo.
Additionally, the Prime Minister will launch the “Mumbai One” app — a unified mobility platform integrating multiple public transport systems across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including metro, suburban rail, and buses. The app aims to simplify ticketing, route planning, and payments for commuters, promoting digital and sustainable mobility.
Officials from the Press Information Bureau (PIB) stated that PM Modi will also address a public gathering during the visit, highlighting the government’s focus on modern infrastructure and urban transformation in India’s financial capital.
