PM Modi turns emotional over Turkey devastation, recalls struggles of 2001 Gujarat earthquake

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tuesday, paid a teary-eyed tribute to those who lost their lives in the earthquake that shook Turkey and Syria. Condoling the deaths in the natural calamity, PM Modi turned emotional and recalled the 2001 earthquake that trembled Gujarat’s Bhuj, claiming thousands of lives.

PM Modi turns emotional over Turkey earthquake

The Prime Minister turned emotional during BJP’s parliament on Tuesday where he paid tribute to thousands of victims affected by earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday morning. He went on to recall the 2001 earthquake in Gujarat during the time he was the serving as the chief minister of the state. Sharing the challenged the natural disaster posed, he said that he could relate with Turkey and Syria, adding that humanitarian assistance being provided by the Government of India to the countries.

Bhuj earthquake

A massive earthquake jolted Gujarat’s Kutch district in 2001 in which 20,000 people lost their lives, while 1.5 lakh people were injured. Damage was also reported in Bhachau and Anjar with hundreds of villages flattened in Taluka of Anjar, Bhuj and Bhachau. The quake destroyed around 40% of homes, eight schools, two hospitals and 4 km of road in Bhuj, while more than 250 heritage building were seriously damaged.
