Post-election violence: The district administration of West Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya on Thursday imposed a curfew in Sahsniang village till further orders. According to an official notification, the curfew was imposed following reports of violence from some areas after election results in the state were declared.

"Information has been received of post-counting violence in Sahsniang village and there is an apprehension that the violence may spread and intensify if left unattended," the official notification read.

"Curfew may be declared in these areas to ensure that the violence is stopped immediately and that the public peace is restored in the area," the order further read.

Meghalaya election result 2023

The ruling National People's Party (NPP) in Meghalaya emerged as the single-largest party in the state on Thursday. It won 26 seats out of the 59 constituencies that went to polls on February 27, the Election Commission said. As it fell short of gaining a majority in the 60-member assembly, chief minister Conrad K Sangma sought the support of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in forming the new government.

The BJP managed to win only two seats.

UDP second-largest party

NPP’s ally the United Democratic Party (UDP), emerged the second-largest party, winning 11 constituencies. It had won only six seats in the 2018 polls.

The Congress and the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC won five seats each.

The newly formed Voice of the People Party (VPP) won four seats, while the Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP), the People's Democratic Front won two seats each. Two Independent also won seats.

Sangma won by a margin of 5,016 votes in the South Tura seat, while his deputy Prestone Tynsong won the Pynursla seat by 8,140 votes.
