Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra, the top justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, and senior attorney Kalpathy Venkataraman Viswanathan were sworn in as justices of the Supreme Court of India today by top Justice of India DY Chandrachud.
For a brief time, the Supreme Court has restored its full complement of 34 judges, including the Chief Justice of India, while three members — Justices KM Joseph, Ajay Rastogi, and V Ramasubramanian — are stepping down from their posts during the summer break itself.
The number of judges on the Supreme Court has decreased to 32 from the authorised 34 following the retirements of Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice MR Shah.
On Thursday, President Droupadi Murmu issued the warrant of appointment for Justices Mishra and Viswanathan to serve as judges of the Supreme Court. The appointments were announced on Twitter by new Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
After Justice JB Pardiwala retires on August 11, 2030, Justice Viswanathan will take over as Chief Justice of India and hold the position until May 25, 2031.
On the website of the Supreme Court, the swearing-in ceremony was broadcast live.
The collegium that made the recommendation, which was presided over by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and included Justices SK Kaul, KM Joseph, Ajay Rastogi, and Sanjiv Khanna, believed that there was only one member of the bar who had been nominated directly to the Supreme Court bench.
“In their considered opinion, Mr KV Viswanathan, Senior Advocate is eminently suitable for being appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court,” the resolution read.
